Revolutionising Dance, Women taking radical actions.
Revolutionising Dance, Women taking radical actions.A day inviting dancers to navigate through the work of seminal women dancers and choreographers, from Isadora Duncan to Yvonne Rainer.
The topics we will cover during the day: We will work with and learn from Isadora Duncan and Yvonne Rainer’s choreographies; we will question how movement travels through bodies; what legacy means for us as movement artists; we will enquire how the body plays a part in leading us towards new territories, exploring wildness and breaking conventions.
The day will be organised around three workshops/talks. In no order, guests teachers are:
• Barbara Kane, fourth generation dancer of Isadora Duncan.
• Sara Wookey, legacy dancer of Yvonne Rainer – @sara_wookey
• Hayley Matthews, multidisciplinary artist; dancer, flutist, vocalist, whose dance work lives in the cracks, on the wild fault lines, in Isadora Duncan’s legacy, connected to the land and people where she lives and in the fertile ground of health, rewilded womanhood and grace. @hayleyjanematthews
This day is for movers and dancers interested in developing their own practice; for movers curious about the legacy work of Duncan, Rainer and being part of a discourse on the subject with fellow contemporary artists.
Friday the 27th of October
At Copperdot Studio, Trowse, Norwich
10-5pm

Sanctuary On The Fault Lines Lab The Dance of Being: Retreat/Movement Conference Lab
The Dance of Being
A Retreat, A Wild Conference, A Lab
Three days of movement classes, workshops, talks, meditation, film screenings & time together
To meet us in the swell between being and action
Join in person in Norfolk, UK or via livestream, wherever you are
Our days will be a spacious rhythm of movement classes, workshops, talks, meditation, film screenings and being together. Calling on the embodied intelligence of dancing, as a way to meet troubled times. Guided by a beautiful, alchemic team of philosophers, dancers, osteopaths, anthropologists, yogis, Rolfers and writers. To meet us in the space of potentiality between being (presence, attention, connectedness) and action (doing, direction, movement).
This series of labs began in 2021, this is the first open fully to the public. Birthed from a radical, fugitive, earth wide movement of professional women dancers called ‘Sanctuary on the Fault Line’. A space that allows dance to be a powerful contributor in meeting troubles times. A space to allow us to slow down and gently flee, to find new perspectives, to liberate ‘the dance’ in all of us, helped by a it’s feminist ways.
For dancers we hope ‘The Dance of Being’ will re-orient you into the beauty of your worth, strengthen you for your work, from gentleness. For others we have expanded the simplicity of dancing, so it can reach and nourish you also, aid you in your life and your work.
We are excited to welcome as contributors this year, John Stirk, Yoga Teacher and trained Osteopath; Barbara Kane, 4th generation Isadora Duncan Legacy Dancer; Bayo Akomolafe, philosopher, writer, activist, professor of psychology, and executive director of The Emergence Network; Hayley J S Matthews, Dancer, Rolfer, leader of the pack at Sanctuary on the Fault Line and curator of the lab, and Andrew Sanger, Dancer, Choreographer, Teacher and Scholar of Dance and Anthropology.
Together we will meet the potential of slowing down in body and mind; the alternative dance of possession; strength, length and lightness; the tremendous force of dynamic movement through the expressive body; liminality, communities of practice and alternative futures and ‘being the dance.
Please see the schedule via the link. Spaces are limited, so book early.

Post Natal Pilates and Play
The beginning of recovery. This journey is for the Post Natal period and up to 1 year following.
The program began on Saturday the 3rd of December and continued on Saturday the 10th December from 9.30- 10.30am. These two sessions detailed the workshop on the Post Natal body, run by Physiotherapist Rachel Canavan. The two initial sessions were for mothers to focus on themselves, learning technique and analysing their practice to aid recovery. The basics of Pilates was taught to the group in the sessions and a series of Post Natal exercises/ assessments were covered, some of the program exercises were specific to individuals.
Rachel has over ten years experience of working in this field and brings personal experience of rehabilitation following the births of three children. She has had to achieve significant levels of recovery to continue to teach both Pilates and dance. Rachel is inspired to help mothers achieve levels of recovery that exceed their own expectation.
Following feedback from some of the initial sessions we ran, some parents wanted an opportunity to focus on their personal rehabilitation, without bringing their child to an initial session. The format for the delivery of the program is to support some of these requests. Workshops offer an opportunity to deliver a large amount of information, so that you are well prepared before you begin weekly rehabilitation. If however, childcare is difficult for these sessions you are still welcome to bring your baby. We want to be as inclusive as possible.
Workshop sessions run slightly differently than a pilates class at Copperdot. This allows a different space and time for feedback and correction. Elements of the class will be taught, however, the specific program created on the Saturdays will be followed during each session. This will support both personal practice within the workshop and then at home.
The delivery is intended to be a cost effective opportunity for inclusion into the program.
Workshop Sessions begin in January 2023. The next workshop is coming soon.
Workshop sessions will then run in a weekly format and begin on the 11th January 2023, the sessions are taught by Physiotherapist Rachel. The sessions will be an opportunity for you and your baby to be together, for you to practice and receive instruction whilst doing the program of exercises at your own pace with feedback.
The weekly workshops will be on Wednesday’s at 11.00- 12.00, in the sessions there will be additional creative opportunities for you to involve your baby in your rehabilitation if you wish. These opportunities may support bonding, communication and playfulness between parent and child.
The weekly workshops will be charged in monthly blocks and are £7.50 per session if you have attended the initial sessions.
If you are unable to join the initial sessions or need to start later, you can also book a 1:1 session which will introduce you to the program, you will then be able to access the workshops. You may also wish to engage in additional 1:1 Physiotherapy sessions, as part of a further rehabilitation journey.
Following your rehabilitation you will then be able to enter Pilates Classes at Copperdot.
Please express your interest online and we will be in touch.
